Running Jack Keane on Kubuntu 10.10 Maverick 64 bit

Linux Port of Jack KeaneGetting Jack Keane to run on the 64 bit edition of Kubuntu 10.10 Maverick Beta was not completely straight forward. Here is a summary of the problems I experienced and how I solved them in the end. [More…]

No Case selection in KoverArtist

KoverArtist case templatesI wanted to do some DVD cases with KoverArtist, but the case template selector was empty, so the program only offered a standard CD jewel case template. It turns out that the Ubuntu Gutsy package is not only old (0.3.2 vs. 0.5) but also incomplete: It is flat out missing the template files. I just had to copy them over from the 0.5 source archive’s src/cases directory to my installation’s /usr/share/apps/koverartist/cases/.

How to resurrect invisible LVM volumes

I had some LVM volumes configured in PCLinuxOS. Never utilised the features, only suffered from the occasional problem or incompatibility. I find the whole thing immensely complex and obscure, so I probably won’t use this again any time soon.

But at least I would like to have access to my old LVM volumes from Ubuntu Gutsy now, and I had a hard time figuring out the correct command sequence to make them visible again (given you know the name of the volume group you want to resurrect):

Repairing SD memory cards hosed by N800

Unfortunately my N800 still “eats” memory cards from time to time. It seems to be due to a corruption of the card’s partition table. Here are the steps I use to recover the cards. The example is for an 8 GB PNY SDHC card formatted with Ext2 filesystem. I used Kubuntu 7.10 Gutsy and TestDisk 6.6 for this.

Generating PDF from scanned images using ImageMagick

I used the following command with some success. To keep the resulting file size down, you may play with the quality parameter and with resampling to an even lower density.

convert -page A4 -quality 20 -density 400x400 -resample 300x300 *.jpeg Result.pdf

Bug in OpenOffice PDF export with Type1 fonts

PDF export in OpenOffice 2.4.1 has a problem when exporting special characters (e.g. german Umlauts) of Type1 fonts. They appear as outlined squares in the PDF document. Everything is fine with TrueType fonts, and the export also works when using the Ubuntu default virtual PDF printer (note that it puts the generated file into the ~/PDF directory by default!).

Easy selection of software sources in Synaptic with Kubuntu

In Ubuntu, there is a non-standard dialog for the Synaptic package manager replacing the “Settings -> Repositories” dialog; it looks like this: Software-Sources

It renders the selection of Ubuntu package sources a lot more comfortable, whereas the standard Synaptic dialog is simply a graphical representation of the file /etc/apt/sources.list.

On a Kubuntu system though, the standard package manager is adept, so this one is augmented with the comfortable source selection, while Synaptic is left with the standard dialog. The trick to get the Ubuntu sources selection in Kubuntu without installing the whole of the gnome ubuntu-desktop package is to install the package software-properties-gtk with its dependencies.
